History of Hotel Llafranch

A trip to the past of Hotel Llafranch

When brothers José, Mario and Manuel Bisbe opened Hotel Llafranch in 1956, the Costa Brava was already recognized worldwide as an important and prestigious tourist destination.

The popularity and personality of the three brothers immediately shaped the history and character of the establishment, which soon became a unique and cosmopolitan place. Each one handled different aspects of the business, complementing each other perfectly and creating a special atmosphere.

Even then, it was clear that Hotel Llafranch would become something more than just a hotel.

Manuel Bisbe's artistic flair and touch of eccentricity had a notable influence on the resonance of the parties that were organized during the summer nights, bringing the name of the hotel and of Llafranc to the pages of national and international newspapers as a prominent news item on tourism on the Costa Brava.

When Manuel was proclaimed “Gypsy of the Costa Brava” by Carmen Amaya, and coinciding with the arrival of celebrities and personalities from all over the world to this corner of Empordà, the hotel’s fame reached a new level. Rock Hudson, Sophia Loren, Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Manuel Serrat, Antonio Gades, Paco de Lucía, Xavier Cugat and La Chunga, among others, stayed here, leaving their mark and demonstrating that daily work could coexist with partying and fun.

Hotel Llafranch has maintained the family-friendly, traditional, and distinctive style that has always characterized it.
